The word for bell-bottoms in French translates to “elephant’s feet,” and that is truly what I felt like in some of the wide-leg or flared options I tried. When I first started perusing maternity denim, I wondered why the majority of options were skinny cut, then after trying a few wide-leg options, I discovered there is a reason: you don’t need to add more width to your already widening frame.

During my first pregnancy, I found the normal waistband plus elastic worked best up to six months, and then it was more comfortable to resort to the “Secret Fit.” Now, I’m slipping into the category more quickly. At the end of the day, it boils down to personal preference and stage of pregnancy. It becomes a bit of a Goldilocks conundrum: Some women find the elastic and waistband irritating to their growing belly others find the stretchy piece of fabric covering them up to their under-bra equally irritating and invasive. The bump-covering options, oddly called “Secret Fit,” sew a piece of cotton or spandex to the top of the jeans, making them an elongated jegging. The elastic pockets basically take your average pair of jeans and replace the pockets with elastic so that the waistband can grow with you. The big denim divide among mothers-to-be is elasticized pockets versus the over-the-bump spandex addition that makes the pants legging-like.

So, I spent the past month test-driving maternity jeans and have found there is a whole elasticized denim world out there to be discovered. I am less than five months pregnant, and I seem to be protruding earlier than expected. But that was two years ago, and now, for round two, I am back on the hunt. A great pair of sexy jeans that can be comfortably worn through all nine months of pregnancy and into the months thereafter. Back then, I embarked on a quest for the best maternity jeans, and I tried on as many pairs as I could. It feels like only a few months ago that I was pregnant the first time around.
